Preventative Care

Modern Dental Can Help You With Preventative Care

Preventative care refers to all of the things you do regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy, preventing serious oral health problems. By brushing and flossing daily, visiting Modern Dental in East Windsor, NJ at least twice a year for checkups and cleaning, and eating a healthy diet, you can prevent tooth decay and gum disease. We will take care of your teeth and gums at each visit, and we can provide you with the information you need to maintain your oral health properly in between visits.

Brushing

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove the plaque that is coating them. Your saliva contains naturally occurring bacteria, and plaque is a thin layer of bacteria that accumulates on the teeth. The bacteria causes tooth decay because it eats through the layer of enamel that coats and protects your teeth. It is important to brush after meals; it is especially important to brush at night before you go to sleep so that the plaque is not coating your teeth for hours, causing decay.

Flossing

Brushing alone does not remove all of the plaque, particularly in between teeth. For this reason, it is important to floss your teeth at least twice a day to remove stuck food particles and to eliminate plaque. Plaque tends to build up on teeth at the gum line and in between teeth, and if it is not removed, tartar forms. Tartar is a calcified, hard coating of plaque, and tartar cannot be removed by brushing and flossing; the dentist must use special tools to remove it.

Eating a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet improves your overall well-being, including oral health. Any foods you eat that stick to or coat your teeth can promote tooth decay, because the bacteria is sticking to or coating your teeth as well. Sugary snacks and carbohydrates are the worst for oral health because they form acids that eat away enamel; if you limit the amount of sugary and carbohydrate laden foods you eat, in addition to brushing after eating, you will be reducing the amount of acid and plaque that covers your teeth. By eating a well-balance diet, you will also strengthen your immune system, which will boost your overall health and help prevent gum and periodontal disease.

Visiting the Dentist Regularly

You should see your dentist at least twice each year for a checkup and for cleaning. Modern Dental will remove the tartar buildup on your teeth, check for cavities, and inspect your gums. We may also take x-rays of your mouth to ensure that there are no cavities forming that aren’t yet visible and that no tooth decay is occurring below the gum line. By catching these problems early, they can be taken care of before causing considerable damage to your teeth.
