Periodontics Performed At Modern Dental

Periodontics includes the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal, or gum, disease. If you have gingivitis, Modern Dental can perform a deep cleaning on your teeth both above and below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar, which will eradicate the inflammation. If your gingivitis has progressed to periodontitis, we can perform flap surgery or bone and tissue grafting to repair the damage.

Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar. Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats the teeth, and when it isn’t removed, it can calcify and harden, forming tartar. Plaque and tartar often build up around the gum line. The bacteria in the tartar and plaque irritate the gums, causing redness, swelling, and bleeding when you brush your teeth. If not treated, gingivitis can worsen and become periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when the inflamed gum begins to pull away from teeth, forming a pocket. The pockets enable plaque and tartar to form down into the gum, which can cause infection. As the body fights the infection along and below the gum line, a breakdown of connective tissue and bone can occur. This can cause teeth to loosen and even fall out. Regular visits to Modern Dental in East Windsor, NJ can help to prevent this unsightly and uncomfortable problem.

Deep Cleaning

If you have gingivitis, the dentist will perform a deep cleaning procedure on your teeth known as scaling and root planning. Scaling involves removing large pieces of tartar through use of an air-powered or ultra-sonic tool, and then scraping off the smaller remaining pieces until the plaque is removed above and below the gum line. The mouth is rinsed periodically to remove debris and bacteria. Teeth may then go through root planing to remove any rough spots that provide good places for bacteria to accumulate and to give the gums a good surface for reattachment.
